- Instruments: the kinds of tools are used in order to study the objects;
- Procedures: the actions of a researcher, aimed at gathering the information;
- Data analysis: operations made with the gathered information.

There are two basic types of dissertations methodology:
- Qualitative
- Quantitative
The difference in the two dissertations methodologies is in cases of their use and design of the research in accordance with each of the dissertations methodologies. Qualitative dissertations methodology uses case studies, informal reviews, secondary data, and observation as its main tools. Observation in qualitative dissertations methodology can be participant and non-participant, both of which subdivide into overt and covert.
Quantitative dissertations methodology has different tools, such as experiments, content analysis, and surveys, including questionnaires and structured interviews. The use of secondary data is also possible in quantitative dissertations methodology, as long as it is the official statistics.
Having chosen a dissertations methodology, it is important to identify it in the paper. What is more, it is necessary to justify the choice.
