Qualitative dissertations methodology uses case studies, informal reviews, secondary data, and observation as its main tools. Observation in qualitative dissertations methodology can be participant and non-participant, both of which subdivide into overt and covert.

Quantitative dissertations methodology has different tools, such as experiments, content analysis, and surveys, including questionnaires and structured interviews. The use of secondary data is also possible in quantitative dissertations methodology, as long as it is the official statistics.
