The definition of research
Research is a process that requires observing, collecting information and, certainly, interpreting it for your reader. Majority of papers are based on the process of research, since it helps students learn independently - studying certain subjects on their own, coming to certain conclusions, developing their analytical skills. So, descriptive papers, interviews and, surely, research papers are the most widespread types of assignments that involve the process of research.
The stages of research
This is a complicated process that can be divided into three stages: searching, evaluating and interpreting.
First stage of research
You are supposed to start with reading materials - primary and secondary ones - that will help you create a good database for the next stages of your research.
You are visiting university library, surfing through the Internet and gathering all relevant information.
Second stage of research
The primary aim of the first stage is to gather as much materials as possible, whereas the main goal of the second stage is to evaluate them and pick the best ones. In order to do that, you should evaluate data by means of analyzing its appropriateness and reliability.
Third stage of research
This is the hardest part of research - you should have some analytical thinking skills in order to interpret the materials you have found. This is not enough just to copy, rewrite or present the information you have found, you have to prove and convince using available information.
Research… This word should be associated with hard work and investment of time and efforts.
